Thee Kind Crusading Kid: The Naughty Soul Kid does it again
By Eaju Ghishing
Kathmandu Post -- 2008-03-24

Nirnaya Shrestha, the popular hip-hop artiste of the band Nirnaya Da NSK, has often been a talk of the town for his contributions to society as he goes on providing charities to different schools of Nepal's remote areas. He has been contributing money handsomely to charities for quite a few years.
Making another one of his efforts in the pipeline, the red-cap guy with extreme low-waist jeans surprised students in Dharan by visiting them and became an integral part of a musical extravaganza.

To continue one of the series of his “Nirnaya Da NSK Education Tour” that began a few months ago, Nirnaya, with a few schools in Dharan, visited schools like Mount Hermon, Koshi Boarding, Gorkha Academy, Bijaya High School and Velocity College, Satya Sishu and Himsikhar School where he sang his popular hits like Ma Nepali, Gaule Jiban and Lekdekhi Besisamma and subsequently collected funds for the basic requirements of the respective educational institutes.

Not only did the hip-hop singer enthrall the students with his electrifying performances, but he also presented materials like notebooks, copies, pens, erasers, sharpeners and clothes to them.

Saurav Shrestha, the local organizer from White Plus, informed, “We've been successful in collecting almost a truckload of notebook, pens and four sacks of uniforms.”

Most of them have already been handed over to the students of Saraswati Bal Anath Ashram while some assistance is going to marginalized, underprivileged and those children who come from poor economic backgrounds.

“I've already conducted programs in ten different schools in town. And all that I gathered from them has been transferred to students studying in places like Nuwakot and Janakpur. I look forward to setting up libraries in all the schools of the remote areas of the country,” Nirnaya added.

“Our students are great fans of his. And his initiative has helped them get better facilities. We're overwhelmed,” Anup Yonzon, principal of Mount Hermon School said.

Accompanying Nirnaya on the tours are his close friends and promising artiste Prashna Shakya and the Madzone Band.

The crew is now soon to perform in different schools of Biratnagar, Hetauda and Pokhara.

Nirnaya Da’ NSK Does It Again
fursad.com 2008-01-09

Having established himself as one of the most popular and sought after hip hop artists in the Nepali music industry, Nirnaya Da’ NSK has been quite successful in advocating his commitments for social issues through his music. Known as much for his contributions for charities as for his music along with his trademark baggy hip hop attire and his red cap, Nirnaya Shrestha has released a new album. It was officially launched at the just concluded Miss Newa held in the capital last week. Visitors at the event were in for a pleasant surprise when they received a CD each of ‘Hami Sangai’ along with the purchase of a ticket. The CD comprises of the song ‘Hami Sangai’ featuring Mandavi Tripathi, it’s music video along with a few bonuses including the song, ‘Lekh Dekhi Besi Samma’ featuring Prashna Shakya, the music video and musical track of the same song along with a new song titled ‘I Be’ and it’s track. The uniqueness of the CD however, is the inclusion of profiles of social institutions that he has been promoting, namely, Nava Dailo, WOREC and CEEN. Attractively packaged in recyclable Nepali paper, ‘Hami Sangai’ shall be distributed in Kathmandu by World Event Nepal and Samjhana Audieo Video is scheduled to handle the distribution outside the valley.

At a conversation with Nirnaya, he stated "An artist has a few responsibilities towards the society he/she is living in and I am trying to fulfill my part of the bargain. ‘Hami Sangai’ includes not only my songs but also the profiles of social organizations which have been helping children, females and the less privileged ones. I always feel very strongly about social issues and the reason to include them on my album is to let people know about such organizations and their work. This is the only reason why I have brought forward my latest album in this new style." Nirnaya further added that ‘Hami Sangai’ was a follow up to his popular song ‘Din Pani Bityo’ and 'Hamro Gauley Jeevan' and that there was another one coming which would make the series complete. Here’s wishing him all our best.

Kunchhang Moktan

If there was only one word in Kunchhang's vocabulary, it would be ?hot?. She uses it to describe herself and the way she expresses herself to almost everything. Forward and cheerful, Kunchhang feels hot is saying the right things at the right time. She describes herself as ?noble born, smart in brains and good at work? and likes rapping a lot. However, she did not always like rapping, and initially listened mainly to pop music. It was one day when she gave it a go that she thought that she just might be good at this. Having rapped for the song ?Mistakes? in Nirnaya's third album, Kunchhang has done concerts in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Dharan. Joining the Miss Teen pageant had been her idea and her friends are only happy to back her up, saying that she will probably get it. Whatever the case, Kunchhang will make a stage presence and she is a fierce contender.

Stars' summer styles
-- By Sneha Moktan and Tenzin Dickyi
Kathmandu Post - 2005-06-07

This summer, find out what the stars think as they list out their summer colors, the ideal place to hang out and the summer time accessories that they think you should stock in. Find out whose style icon is Nima Rumba and who thinks no one in Nepal is “style icon” material. Also, who thinks white is just right and who likes a dash of color added to the summer. For all this and more, read along as City Post brings to you the “Stars' Summer Style” opinion.
Sarun Tamrakar
For all the girls who went gaga over him in the video of Aaudai Jaadai of the Uglyz, we've got some more for you to drool over.

And now if you've taken your eyes off his adjacent photo, read this and know about his style mantra. Bright hues like red and green appeal to him, and what he likes to see a girl in is a fresh look. Pity he didn't elaborate over it, so all of us could try to get the look. He thinks everyone should stock in on slippers, sunscreen and sunglasses. Nirnaya is quite the style icon for this guy. But just for the record, he has no plans of going hip-hop like Nirnaya though. He opines that New Road and Durbar Marg are the places to hang out. So go for it, you might just bump into the man himself!

So there we had the style statements from the big shots themselves.

INTERVIEW OF NSK DA’ NAUGHTY SOUL KID (NIRNAYA)
By: Merina Manandhar
tanneri.com - Falgun, 2061 [2005 AD]

There’s no boundary for anything until and unless the sky is the limit. This statement perhaps well adjusts with music and today if we just take a look around, the hip- hop culture has been dominating the airwaves. Baggy trousers, baggy t- shirts, a scarf, which is completed with a cap of baseball and what’s in around the world.
The hip- hop scene in Nepal has been growing rapidly in the past few years. To break this new ground today we have hip- hopers like Nepsydaz, Madzone, Nep-soldier, nine double seven, dxp3, Shreeking, and name it you get it but the prominent figure and the pioneer to the own respect in kathmandu hip- hop circuit is NIRNAYA DA’ NSK. Known as the naughty soul kid, and one of the former band members of Rappaz Union, Nirnaya has a different perspective of looking of in life. Currently he is working in Sajilo.com, running hip- hop programs in image fm 97.9 and has his solo album in the market titled “MA NEPALI – NSK STYLE”. Here we present you all a short and sweet in interview with – NIRNAYA DA’ NSK

CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING BOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD AND YOUR SCHOOLING?
No doubt that my childhood was pretty much good, not that different from any other kids. Well, talking bout my studies I was put into different institutions. First I completed my grade 1 from Little Angels School, and then I rolled on to St. Xavier and studied till the grade 4. Then I went to Usa where I studied up till 8th grade and I came back to Nepal and did my 10th grade from St. Xavier. I completed my intermediate level from Campion academy and did my bachelors from Campion College.

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR MEMORABLE MOMENT DURING YOUR SCHOOL?
UHH… no doubt lots of memorable moments were there in my life. When I was in U.S.A in school, we were not used to put commas and all those things in our writings but it was a different in Nepal. When I came back, I got pretty low marks because I didn’t have a habit of putting commas and all. I hardly used to attend my classes and on top of that my math was really very weak. So it was pretty tuff to manage everything.

WHY IS YOUR NAME “NIRNAYA DA’ SOUL KID”?
People say that I’m naughty but I really don’t feel like I’m naughty. I think it’s not me but my soul that’s naughty and my parents called me “kid” babu at home. They really think that I look like a kid. So that’s how my name is NSK.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MUSIC FIELD? BESIDES THIS WHAT WAS YOUR AIM?
Well, I used to work in image fm 97.9. The first song. The first song I recorded was “Bring Da’ House Down ” this particular song was bout the country itself. At that time the situation of Nepal was not that good and young generation were not much aware of what was really going around here. So I just started out as a messenger to make the young people aware of what is happening in and around the country. They are confused bout which way to choose and which is the best. I think the music has got the power to influence people.
Besides. Being in this field, I had always wanted to do something in computer field and I ‘m still into it. I’m currently engaged in the site “SAJILO.COM”.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE ALL YOUR WORKS IN ONCE?
No doubt that if one knows how to manage his/ her life then work really works. I have my own time management I plan accordingly like what I’m gonna do or where am I gonna be I write scheduled on my diary. So, it’s all bout time management if we really follow the time management thing then I guess 24 hours is pretty big time.

SO HOW DID YOU GET INTO IMAGE FM 97.9?
A decade age in Nepal, there were no hip-hop programs. 7 years back image fm had just started and was in its transmission. I got into it with the help of my sister. She offers me to do a different programs and I agreed to do a hip- hop show. That’s how I have been doing one hour of hip- hop R & B, rap and soul on air.

WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
Definitely my country Nepal is inspiration for me, the people, and the ongoing situation inspires me to do something for my country.

HOW DID RAPPAZ UNION FORMED?
Well, during one of my programs in image, Sammy (Samrat Khadka) came in and requested me to play his recorded song on air. I liked his song and we both decided to go on with one more song titled “JI_LI_LI”. I played it on air and there was one guy named Josh who was listening to the very same song and was rapping on it. He came to us and told that he wants to rap in our song and he too brought his friend Rinchin along wit him. So, there were four of us with different identity, different faces, different work but the thing we all had in common is that we’ve all were hip- hop lovers so we decided our self to name as ”Rappaz union” because basically it means union of rappers.

SO WHAT IN FACT “Rappaz UNION” ALL BOUT?
LIKE I SAID “RAPPAZ UNION” is the union of rappers. In august 2000, we formed our band and decided to come up with our debut album. So, consequently in December, we came out with our 1st debut album titled “FO’ YA’ ALL”. Ii was the 1st English rap album in Nepal. Secondly we came out with “DA GAME MUS’ GO ON” which features whole lot of new artist and the third was “DA’ NEPALI TOUCH” which also do features new artist.

WHAT STRUGGLERS DID YOU GUYS FACE IN BEGINNING TO BRINGING UP YOUR ALBUM?
We faced a lot of difficulties in bringing our 1st debut alum. The first thing was that, at that time rap was not a part of Nepali culture people did rarely knew bout hip- hop genre, music. W had to distribute ourselves, even the marketing was laid upon us and we had to go around the stations for requesting to play our songs and they used to questioning us like why do we have to sing English songs after all we were all Nepalese. So, it was a pretty tuff time for us but then we were very much supported by the English media like wave magazine, Himalayan times and our parents were also very supportive.

WHY DID RAPPAZ UNION SPILT?
Well, when we released our debut album “FO’ YA’ ALL” in between Rinchin went to Canada and settled over there. So, he was out of the band. When were released our 2nd album “DA GAME MUS’ GO ON ” Josh went abroad. In third album “DA’ NEPALI TOUCH” it was only Sammy and me in it. But then he said that he wanted to release his solo album. But during the interval of one and half years he didn’t came up with it. So, I decided to come up with my solo album “MA NEPALI NSK STYLE” and this album is more personal to me.

TELL US SOMETHING BOUT’ YOUR SOLO ALBUM “MA NEPALI NSK STYLE”?
Well this album is basically bout’ the Nepali culture. There’s a song called “Gaule Jeewan” which is a love song and it talks bout’ the people of Nepali. It inspires people to go to their roots. There’s this song called “Suna” which talks bout’ the marriage that happens in Nepal, neither girls have seen her bridegroom nor the guys has seen his bride. So, it’s bout their feelings for each other. There is of another song titled “Bounce” which infact talks bout’ the feelings of guy and a girl who are going to disco for the first time as it has been only couple of years that disco culture have existed in Nepal. There’s another song titled “Pyasi”. It’s bout’ a woman who was desperately in love with a guy and everything is told by the song itself. Another song titled “Ama” in which a person reminishes his childhood days. Every song have its meaning. So we have to understand that what message is deliberating to us.

IN THIS ALBUM YOU HAVE ONLY FEATURED FEMALE ARTIST. WHY IS IT SO?
Well my songs are like conversation between two opposite people. Female artists kind of beautify the whole song and moreover I wanted people to know the real talent of Nepalese woman.

HOW DO YOU TAKE “MUSIC” AS?
Basically music has the power to motivate people. As a musician, we have a big responsibility. People are watching us, they are listening and reading us. So, it’s our responsibilities to give positive message to them. You see in every corners of the world that people are proud of their country but these feelings of patriotisms has faded away in Nepal. So, it’s a musician’s job to make the young generation feel that they also must be proud of being a Nepali. Today the young generation is pretty much confused with their own lives. So, I think music is the guiding light that can lead them to the right path.

WHAT DOES HIP- HOP MEANS TO YOU AND HOW IS IT GROWING IN NEPAL?
Hip- hop is the art of story telling. It’s the medium of pouring own feelings like rock culture, pop culture, hip- hop in fact is also a culture and rap, R&B is the type of hip-hop.
In Nepal, hip-hop culture is pretty much growing strong. The foundation of hip- hop has been laid here. Even the people in remote place of Nepal sing hip- hop songs. The awards ceremony has given place a hip- hop genre. So, I must say that hip- hop has really been growing in Nepal.

WE HAVE HEARD THE NEPALI HIP- HOP IS NOW GOING TO BE AN INTERNATIONAL IS IT RITE?
It’s good that Nepali hip- hop is growing big, going on to the international level. But in my opinion, it makes no sense if we people have no knowledge of it. Right now instead of taking it to the international level, its better that we try to give this music to our local people and every people in every corner of Nepal should be made aware of what is hip- hop music before going on international. I really want to make hip- hop a part of Nepali culture.

SO WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING TO MAKE HIP-HOP A PART OF NEPALI CULTURE?
Well, nowadays I’m working on the promotion of my fourth album. I want people to know about hip-hop culture. I want to spread positive message to the people. I’ve done shows in Nagarkot, Chitwan, Hetuada, and Pokhara. I want every single person in every corner of Nepal to know about hip-hop.

HIP-HOP RAP, REFERS TO THE GANSTA’ RAP AND STEREOTYPICAL IMAGE OF VIOLENT THING. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THIS?
Like I said, basically hip-hop is the art of story telling, pouring out ones sorrow and feelings. Definitely, in USA. hip-hop is a part of Nepali culture. For me hip-hop is the power to spread positive message to the people and to the youngsters.

NOW A DAYS WE SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE DRESSED LIKE A HIP-HOPERS. IS IT GOOD TO DRESS LIKE THIS?
Definitely. Because the whole world is moving on. Everybody wants to look good. Everybody wants to look good. If you look good then your whole day will be good because you feel good inside. Basically it’s all bout’ getting into the fashion. Now days hip- hop is in the air, so everybody wants to be dressed up like it.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DO YOU SEE IN YOURSELF FROM YEARS BACK AND NOW?
Lot of difference. The ways I look have changed a lot. This change in good because I love for people’s love but sometime its also very scary cause this field is just for momentary. After few years will people have same love for me that they do have now? So that what I am afraid of.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT MONEY OR FAME?
Both of them are not important for me because I started as a messenger. I just wanted to give the positive message to the young generation to make them aware of the up going situation of Nepal. But yes definitely fame is important and money comes along with it.

WHAT ROLE DOES MUSIC VIDEO PLAY IN THE POPULARITY OF A SONG?
Now a day’s lots of people are watching, listening to the TV. People are appreciating thing, seen on TV. Music video do play important role for the song came now days the competition have really going on strong. They are very eye appealing and are pleasing to ones mind and to the eyes too. Its basically as “a pictures speaks a thousand words” so it does really plays an important role in the popularity of the song.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE TO THE YOUNGSTERS?
Study hard coz education in foundation strong of life. If you make your foundation strong you gonna make your life stronger but if blunder now, you’ll have to suffer later stay away from drugs. Life is all bout ups and down in life coz there’ll be coming a better days ahead and no matter how happy a person may seems to be, there’s along a darker path for him too which he have to cross.
And yeah we have been featuring a whole lot of new artist in my album. If you want to express you talent then mail me at nirnaya@nirnaya.com.np and whoever have my album “MA NEPALI DA’ NSK STYLE” there’s a something special will be getting for more information for this login to my site.

While we’ve already brought into news about Nirnaya’s charity works and social works, this interactive CD also is a part it. The CD besides entertainment provides important messages regarding drugs and AIDS.

There are three tracks in the CD, two music videos and two music tracks. The new song that is compiled in the CD is Haami Sangai which, as Nirnaya mentions, is the third part of “Din Pani Bityo”. The CD also compiles the music video of “lek dekhi besi samma”, one of his popular tracks.

Another special feature of the CD is that, the cover is made out of 100% recycled paper and the price is only Rs. 65. Besides, the CD also includes social messages and profiles of different social welfare organizations like WOREK, CWIN and Nava Dailo.
